Arbre élevé, à écorce lisse se crevassant assez tard en losanges, à rameaux étalés bourgeons secs, tomenteux; jeunes pousses blanches-cotonneuses, à feuilles palmatilobées.
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Rivières et lieux humides, dans presque toute la France; Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe centrale et méridionale; Asie occidentale et centrale; Afrique septentrionale

Tall tree, with smooth bark, later cracking into diamonds, with outspread branches, buds dry & tomentose; young shoots white-cottony, palmatilobate leaves.
